Estimating Waste for a Roofing Tear-Off
Squares, layers, and why roofing is a weight problem.
Do the math in squares
One roofing square is 100 square feet. A square of three-tab asphalt shingles weighs roughly 250 pounds; architectural shingles run heavier. Multiply squares by layers to get true tonnage, because two-layer tear-offs are extremely common on older Visalia homes.
Match the container to the weight
A 20 square single-layer tear-off is about two and a half tons and fits comfortably in a 15 yard box. Add a second layer and you are near five tons, which calls for a container rated for that weight rather than a bigger volume.
Placement and cleanup
Set the container along the eave with the drop zone tarped. Run a magnetic sweeper across the driveway and lawn before the truck returns, since nails are the most common post-roof complaint homeowners have.
